Community Service

Barabara Bush Literacy Foundation & HAPA2025 spring community service

Spring 2026 date TBA

Visit the Event Page for More Information

The Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation is HAPA’s new community service partner, replacing Reading is Fundamental.  HAPA members are encouraged to check out the Foundation’s mission and learn more at the website: https://www.barbarabushhouston.org/. In the spring, HAPA will have volunteer opportunities to distribute books as part of the My Home Library Program.  At these events, children are provided with 5 age appropriate books to take home and create their own home libraries.

Ladies who are interested are also encouraged to sign up to become Reading Round Up monthly volunteers or fill-ins.  Volunteers visit schools monthly to read aloud to the kids. The foundation has requested additional volunteers to serve as fill-ins for the months that regular volunteers are unavailable.  To become a volunteer, fill out the application at the following website:
https://www.barbarabushhouston.org/readingroundup.

Reading Roundup volunteers are still needed for December 9th at 10 AM for Thornwood Elementary! Contact Krista Heidersbach for more information at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The foundation also has a Ladies for Literacy Guild.  HAPA’s Deborah Dunkum is the current president elect.

Funds exceeding $1,000 are donated every year to the Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation, enabling hundreds of students to receive free books. Panhellenic women assist in the distribution of these books, reading to the children, and volunteering their time as needed.
